Close up with Canadian Nature Photography

On A recent photography trip in the Canadian Rockies, I was fortunate to get this encounter with this majestic Elk. I had actaully gotten a glimpse of him 3 nights earlier but it was near dark and I was unable to get a shot off before he headed into thick brush for the night

On this day there had been a heavy overnight snowfall and I decided to head back to the area I had last spotted him. With A little scouting I picked up some fresh tracks in the snow. It was a lone elk track so I figured I had a good chance it was a bull elk. After a hour of heavy going in deep snow, I poked out into a small opening in the trees and saw that I was only about 20 feet away from this magical animal, to close for comfort in my books! I was able to get to a more reasonbale distance before he spotted me and at that moment I was able to capture this photo. The snow falling from the tree really adds a nice element as does his somewhat agresive body possition. Luckily he moved of a short distance and I was able to continue getting some pictures for a while.

For this Shot I was using a Nikon D800E with a 500mm f4 Nikon Lens on a RRS TVC 33 Tripod and BH 55 Ballhead. ISO 400 F8 @ 1/400
